Celebrate Safely This Summer: Fireworks, Grilling & Bonfire Safety Tips

Summer is made for backyard barbecues, fireworks, and evenings around the fire pit. While these traditions create lasting memories, they also bring an increased risk of fires and injuries if proper precautions aren't taken.

At Arrow Service Team, we know firsthand how quickly a fun celebration can turn into an emergency. A few simple safety measures can help protect your family, your home, and your guests all season long.

Fireworks Safety

Even consumer-grade fireworks should be handled with extreme care.

Create a Safe Launch Area

  • Light fireworks outdoors on a flat, stable, non-flammable surface such as a concrete driveway.

  • Stay well away from homes, garages, vehicles, and dry grass or brush.

Keep Water Nearby
Always have a garden hose connected and ready or keep a large bucket of water within reach to quickly extinguish stray sparks or small fires.

Fireworks should never be stored near fuel, chemicals, or combustible materials.

Never Re-Light a "Dud"
If a firework doesn't ignite:

  • Wait at least 20 minutes.

  • Never attempt to re-light it.

  • Place it in a bucket of water before disposing of it.

Dispose of Fireworks Properly
Used fireworks can stay hot long after they've burned out. Allow them to cool completely, soak them thoroughly with water, and then dispose of them in the trash.

Sparklers Are Hotter Than You Think
Many people assume sparklers are harmless, but they burn at approximately 2,000°F—hot enough to melt metal.

  • Always supervise children.

  • Hold sparklers at arm's length.

  • Place used sparklers directly into a bucket of water.

Grilling Safety

Nothing says summer like firing up the grill. Whether you're cooking with propane or charcoal, safety starts before the first burger hits the grate.

Give Your Grill Space
Place your grill at least 10 feet away from:

  • Your home

  • Deck railings

  • Vinyl siding

  • Awnings

  • Trees and shrubs

Grill started fire by being to close to the home.

Grill Outdoors Only
Never operate a grill inside:

  • Garages

  • Breezeways

  • Enclosed patios

  • Tents or canopies

These spaces can trap dangerous carbon monoxide and increase fire risk.

Keep It Clean
Grease buildup is one of the leading causes of grill fires. Regularly clean the grates and grease tray to reduce flare-ups.

Inspect Propane Connections
Before lighting:

  • Apply soapy water to the hose connections.

  • If bubbles appear when the gas is turned on, you have a leak.

  • Tighten the fittings or replace the hose.

  • Always open the grill lid before lighting a gas grill.

Use Charcoal Safely
Only use approved charcoal starter fluid, and never add lighter fluid once the coals are hot or glowing.

Bonfire Safety

A backyard bonfire is a great way to end the evening, but open flames require constant attention.

Check Burn Restrictions
Before starting any fire, verify your local fire danger rating and make sure there are no burn bans in effect.

Choose a Safe Location
Build your fire pit at least 25 feet away from:

  • Homes

  • Garages

  • Fences

  • Vehicles

  • Overhanging tree branches

Create a Safety Zone
Clear at least 10 feet around the fire pit of:

  • Dry grass

  • Leaves

  • Twigs

  • Firewood

  • Other combustible materials

Never Use Gasoline or Other Accelerants
Avoid using gasoline, kerosene, or lighter fluid to start or revive a fire. These liquids can cause dangerous flash fires and severe burns.

Put the Fire Out Completely
Before heading inside:

  1. Pour water over the fire.

  2. Stir the ashes.

  3. Add more water.

  4. Repeat until every ember is cold to the touch.

A fire isn't out until it's completely cool.
